Bertha B. Modzik Obituary (1934

Bertha B. Modzik, 83, of Morgantown, died December 17, 2017. Bertha was born on August 14, 1934 in Brownsville, PA, and was a daughter of the late Mike and Elizabeth Billie. She was proud of her Hungarian heritage. She learned many of the family traditions, especially in the kitchen, and she eagerly shared her talents and expertise for many to enjoy. Bertha graduated from Morgantown High School in 1952. She excelled in music, being All State in both band and orchestra. She married her husband Andrew who was in the U.S. Air Force which allowed them to travel and live throughout the United States and overseas. Bertha attended the Panama City Beauty College in Panama City, FL. She was a gifted artist, instructing painting for the ceramic class at the Sabraton branch of the Senior Monongalians. She was actively involved with her children and family activities. She supported her children in every aspect educationally, spiritually, and athletically; being P.T.O. president, a band mom, youth bowling instructor and team mom for all other sporting endeavors. Bertha enjoyed sports. She loved golfing, bowling, playing softball and attending WVU games. She was an avid Mountaineer fan. Bertha was a devoted wife and mother. Her grandchildren were her pride and joy. She immensely enjoyed spending time with them, watching them grow and celebrating their successes. She was a member of St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church formerly St. Theresa Catholic Church. Bertha was the coordinator of the Funeral Luncheon Committee for over 30 years, a member of the funeral choir, and was also a team member for Sarahs Table. She was a Eucharistic Minister and worked as a volunteer in that capacity at Monongalia General Hospital. Bertha is a former member of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas, and the Mon General Hospital Auxiliary. Bertha is survived by her three children, Karen Modzik of Morgantown, Andrew Modzik, Jr. and his wife Delila of Stokesdale, NC and Kathryn Houser and her husband Keith of Morgantown; four grandchildren, Ryan Houser of Elkins, Nathan Houser of Morgantown, Adrian Modzik of Charleston, SC and Adam Modzik of Greenville, NC; two step-grandchildren, Chase and Grant Kleinhenz of Statesville, NC; her sisters, Oma Bierer of Bobtown, PA and Mikilene Kisner of Morgantown; as well as many cousins, nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Andrew Modzik, Sr. and her brother, Frank Z. Billie. Friends may join the family to honor Berthas life and legacy at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, One Guthrie Lane, Morgantown, on Thursday, December 21, 2017 from 3-5 and 6-8 PM and again on Friday, December 22, 2017 from 9 AM until the celebration of the Mass of Christian Burial at 10 AM with Msgr. Anthony Cincinnati, STD, VE as celebrant. Bertha will be laid to rest next to her husband at East Oak Grove Cemetery.
